Botanical Explosion

Bhutan is rich in plant diversity, and is a heaven for botanical exploration. More than 5,500 vascular plants are recorded and it is estimated that Bhutan has more than 7,000 species of plants. Many of these are yet to be discovered. This diversity is attributed to the geographical location of the country in Eastern Himalaya, which is considered as a biological hot spot. Being a mountainous country, even a small gain or loss of altitude provides immense varieties of plant diversity. Hot and humid sub-tropical valleys harbour sub-tropical and tropical species. Rare orchids like Paphiopedilum fairrieanum and P. venustum are found in such valleys. Alpine meadows are in full display of colours during the summer months, mostly covered by dwarf Rhododendrons and Blue poppies.
